Hello Reader,

If you’ve ever been to a Model UN conference, you’ve probably seen the Power Delegate—the one who speaks the most, dominates every caucus, and shuts others down in debate.

They think they’re running the room.

But here’s the truth: Being the loudest doesn’t mean being the best.

A real leader in MUN isn’t the one who controls the bloc—it’s the one who builds it. The best delegates don’t overpower others; they persuade, strategize, and bring people together.

Let’s break down the Power Delegate Myth and what actually wins awards in MUN.

📜 Myth #1: Talking the Most Means You’re Winning

Some delegates believe if they dominate the speaker’s list, and are the loudest voice around the Chair that they’re guaranteed Best Delegate. But chairs don’t just count speaking time—they assess substance, clarity, and impact.

Speaking for five minutes without a clear argument won’t impress anyone. In fact, talking too much can make you seem unfocused and repetitive.

💡 Reality Check: Quality over quantity. While you should try to speak as much as possible, make sure that each speech actually has a purpose, and helps to move committee forward.

Tip: Every speech should have a clear purpose—introduce a solution, respond to an argument, or move the debate forward. Check out our guide on how to beat the 10 minute rule here!

📜 Myth #2: Controlling the Bloc Is the Goal

Power Delegates often dictate rather than collaborate, forcing others to follow their plan. They think being the loudest voice in the bloc gives them control. But here’s the catch—when voting time comes, no one likes being pushed around.

💡 Reality Check: MUN is a game of alliances. If you don’t have support, your resolution won’t pass.

Even if you write the most detailed, well-researched resolution, you can’t pass it alone. The best delegates make others feel like their input matters—because when people feel invested, they are more likely to support your ideas.

Tip: Be a leader, not a dictator. Ask for input, find compromises, and make others feel valued. It doesn't matter if you have a mountain of standalone clauses in your resolution, it's more impressive if you can integrate your ideas with your teammates.

📜 Myth #3: Being Aggressive Shows Strength

Some delegates think that shutting others down makes them look strong. They interrupt, dismiss arguments, or even attack others personally.

💡 Reality Check: Diplomacy is key. The best delegates know how to debate firmly but respectfully.

Aggression makes other delegates hesitant to work with you. Even if you have the best ideas, you won’t get anywhere if your bloc doesn’t trust or respect you.

Tip: Disagree with ideas, not people. A calm, confident tone earns more respect than aggression ever will. When a debate gets heated, focus on your arguments—not attacking the delegate making them.

So, How Should a Delegate Actually Act?

MUN isn’t about being the loudest or the most forceful—it’s about being confident, strategic, and diplomatic. The best delegates balance strength with cooperation. Here’s how:

Be Confident, Not Overbearing
Confidence comes from preparation. If you know your country’s stance, anticipate counterarguments, and have a strong grasp of the topic, you’ll naturally sound more authoritative—without needing to dominate others.

Use Persuasion, Not Intimidation
Winning MUN isn’t about forcing others to agree with you; it’s about convincing them to. Use logic, negotiation, and compromise to bring people to your side.

Give Others a Voice
Strong delegates lift others up. If you help newer or quieter delegates contribute, they’ll be more likely to work with you when it matters. A real leader builds alliances instead of just commanding them.

Want to Actually Win in MUN?

Instead of trying to be a Power Delegate, focus on being a Strategic Delegate:
Master your country’s policy—know where you stand and why.
Build alliances early—your bloc is your power base.
Present practical solutions—good ideas win awards.
Engage in diplomacy—influence is more powerful than control.
