Hey Reader,
As we get back into the swing of things, it’s time to introduce a new concept that we've been working on, it's helped me totally rethink conference preparation overall. We're calling it the Conference Prep Funnel.
This five-stage framework breaks down your journey to Model UN success, and maps out the process where you're starting off with loads of information and uncertainty, all the way to being able to distill your ideas into a 30-90 second speech.
It looks a little something like this:
1. Dive Into the Background Guide 📘
Your background guide is always going to be Point A. It’s where you uncover your committee’s purpose, understand the topics, and start thinking about your country’s potential stance.
At this stage, highlight key terms, and understand the concepts and conflicts—it’s your first step in shaping a winning strategy.
2. Research with Purpose 🔍
Up next, use the information you gathered in your background guide to influence the research process, nail down what ideas work and don't work. Try and figure out if anything works particularly well with your country's policy. Expand beyond the guide. Explore your country’s policies, historical context, and key positions. Dive into UN reports, scholarly articles, and news sources.

3. Turn Ideas Into Policy Proposals 💡
This is a key part that many delegates can end up neglecting.
Research leads to ideas, and ideas lead to policy proposals. Turning your ideas into something that can create a robust resolution is where you go from student to Model UN delegate. Be creative, stay true to your country’s policies and don't forget to stay GROOVY. What specific steps would you advocate for in committee?
4. Craft Your Position Paper ✍️
The position paper ties it all together.
It’s your chance to concisely present your research, policies, and solutions. A well-written position paper is your ticket to standing out and steering committee discussions.
5. Prepare Your Opening Speech 🎤
Your opening speech is the final step and is your moment to shine. Summarize your position, engage your audience, and set the tone for fruitful debate. Practice delivering it confidently and concisely—it’s the first impression you’ll make as a delegate.
When it all comes together, it looks something like this:
With the Conference Prep Funnel, preparation becomes less overwhelming and more methodical.
By following these steps, you’ll not only excel but also enjoy the process of becoming a stronger delegate.
Best of luck!
